Born in the year 491 in a small village within the Halfling Union, Quint Ontario was the first son of father Hooper and mother Viola. The name Ontario probably evolved from a more halfling like name, but what that name was the family truthfully did not know. A very clever and inquisitive child, Quint would find ways to escape his crib when he was just barely old enough to walk, and at the age of 7 he would sneak almost silently to the outside of his father’s room to watch his old man work on locks, something that he only knew had to do with the “family business”. He would use this same silent approach in an attempt to snatch a taste of his mother’s exquisite pies, but a mother’s perception can often be keener than the best sight of any dragon.

By the time Quint had reached the age of twelve, Hooper had noticed his son’s talents and inquisitve nature. He decided that it was time to introduce his son to the “family business”... “The aquisition of goods through the ‘finder’s keepers’ clause” Hooper called it. Quint quickly learned the art of lockpicking, and he trained with both shortsword and bow in mock combat with his father. However, his father emphasized that in a world of giants, a halfling has but one unfailing tactic for handling danger: remaining unseen and unheard. “Quint, my boy,” he would say “there’s good business to be had with the big folk. But never trust them as far as you can throw them in matters of life and death.”

Not long before Quint’s 22nd birthday, Hooper came to inform his son that he would be gone for a little while on a “business trip” with a new client. It was at this time that Hooper decided that it may be time for his son to go out and have his chance at putting the business skills to practical use. Before he left, Hooper gave Quint some of his best equipment to get his son started. Among these items were a pair of finely made gloves that seemed to enhance his dexterity, a ring of power, a full assortment of finely made tools, a magical shortsword, a magical shortbow, and a mithril chain shirt. “This mithril shirt is as light as a feather, and as hard as dragon scales!” Hooper told his son with enthusiasm. They were all items Hooper had acquired over the years fromm various journeys and business ventures.

Assuring his wife and son that he would not be gone long, Hooper set off. Quint decided to stay and take care of his mother for the time being, as Viola was in the middle of making some cold weather clothing for for her son anyway. To the dismay of Quint and his mother, months passed without Hooper’s return. While he felt a responsibility to his mother, Quint decided that it was time to head out on his venture, now with the additional task of finding his father’s possible whereabouts. Before he left, his mother fixed his collar, hugged him tightly, and told him “Stay warm. Don’t go on any stupid ventures. And keep an eye out for that daft father of yours.” Finally, Quint waved once more to his mother and set out on his first adventure in the hopes of acquiring riches, finding his father, and returning home to his village safely one day.
